How to Choose a Meta Ads Agency (And the Questions to Ask First)

Every Meta ads agency pitch looks similar: strong creative, sharp targeting, a case study with a big-looking number. None of that tells you whether they'll actually generate leads for your business, because the ad is only half of what determines that.

Ask about the funnel, not just the ads

An ad's job is to earn a click. What happens after the click — the landing page, the load time, the form, the follow-up — decides whether that click becomes a lead. An agency that only touches the ad has no control over, and often no visibility into, the part of the funnel that actually converts.

  • Who builds the landing pages the ads point to — the agency, or your existing team, or nobody?
  • Is conversion tracking (Pixel + Conversions API) actually implemented, or just "set up" as a checkbox?
  • How do they know if a campaign is failing because of the ad, or because of the page?

Reporting you should expect

Impressions and click-through rate are the easiest numbers to report and the least useful for deciding whether to keep spending. Ask for reporting tied to what you actually care about:

  • Cost per lead (or per qualified lead, if you can distinguish them)
  • Which ad sets and creative are driving leads vs. just clicks
  • A weekly or biweekly cadence, not a monthly summary you see after the budget's already spent

Red flags

  • A guaranteed number of leads or a guaranteed cost-per-lead before they've seen your market or product
  • Reporting that only shows reach and engagement, never cost-per-lead
  • No clear answer for what happens when a campaign underperforms — is there a plan to diagnose it, or just a plan to keep running it?

The agencies worth hiring treat the ad and the page it points to as one system, because that's genuinely what determines whether the campaign works — the questions above are how you find out whether an agency actually operates that way or just says so in the pitch.
